The Victorian Ski season is officially open and skiing is a perfect non contact sport that all the family can enjoy. Social distancing measures are still in place both on and off the slopes this year, so lift lines are bound to be longer but the slopes should be less crowded, making 2020 a great year for a family or friends ski trip. Ski resorts across the state will have to restrict numbers, so get in early and book your trip so you don’t miss out.

Where to go skiing in Victoria this season

Mt Buller – The snow machine has been pumping out the powder for a few weeks now and the regulars have moved back onto the mountain. Covid restrictions mean that resort entry, lift passes and lessons must be pre-booked on the Mount Buller website, as numbers are limited. At this stage there is no tobogganing but private ski lessons are available for kids. After being cooped up at home for the past few months, what could be more fun for the family than a day trip to Mt Buller over the school holidays?

Lake Mountain – This alpine resort has the best cross country skiing in Victoria. With kilometres of trails for skiing, snow hiking or snowshoeing, you’ll be spoiled for choice. You’ll need good shoes, poles and snow gear. Around and About will pull into the Marysville or Narbethong rental centre so you can pick up everything you need. Don’t forget to pre-book equipment so it’s ready to go when you are.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of touring, why not stop off in the Yarra valley on the way up? Check out the Marysville Old Fashioned Lolly Shop for fine jams, natural honey, coffee beans and, of course, LOLLIES! The owner, Sue, stocks old favourites like spearmint leaves, rock candy, NZ marshmallow fish, Willy Wonka chocolate bars and more. Around and About Travel can arrange an early pub meal at the Duck Inn after a day on the slopes. Healesville has the Innocent Bystander cellar door to visit on the way home and Four Pillars gin is the darling distillery of the area.

Falls Creek – Need a lift? Falls Creek is 376 kms and 4 and a half hours drive from Melbourne so it’s not a day trip but if you’re planning a snow holiday up that way Around and About Tours can pick you up from anywhere in Melbourne, deliver you to Falls Creek, then return to take you home again at the end of your trip. Falls Creek resort is a ski-in ski-out village with over 450 hectares of downhill skiing to challenge and excite those who want to carve up the slopes. Cross country skiers will love the 65kms of groomed trails here too.
